According to the 5-year study, Latest Trends in Child Pedestrian Safety, approximately one child per day, or 365 children per year, died as a result of a motor vehicle-pedestrian collision between 2001 and 2007. With the death of any number of children considered a tragedy, some communities have become proactive by providing hazard information for children and their parents about walking through their community. The community of Highland Park, NJ has created a website entitled Children Pedestrian Health and Safety Audit. The website provide critical information for children pedestrians and their parents about school locations, crosswalks, traffic signals, and walkway hazards that could be potentially dangerous to any pedestrian, but especially children. Another great feature of this website is that if children or their parents spot a hazard or any other worthwhile information about pedestrian safety, they can add the info to the website themselves, making Children Pedestrian Health and Safety Audit a fun way for children and their parents to be involved in the community.
